High-Performance SDR: GNU Radio and the IBM Cell Broadband Engine

چکیده
Software-Defined Radio (SDR) allows the signal processing components of a wireless device to be implemented in a reconfigurable processor. Recent research has focused on using general-purpose processors (GPPs) for performing signal processing in SDRs. While older GPPs lacked the processing power required for implementing many of the modern, commercial, digital waveforms, newer GPPs offer promise. In this paper, we explore Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) components of the x86, PowerPC, and Cell Broadband Engine (CBE) processors. We also explore the multiprocessing capabilities of the CBE, and its impact on improving the performance of GNU Radio.

Enabling MAC Protocol Implementations on Software-Defined Radios
Over the past few years a range of new Media Access Control (MAC) protocols have been proposed for wireless networks. This research has been driven by the observation that a single one-size-fits-all MAC protocol cannot meet the needs of diverse wireless deployments and applications. Unfortunately, most MAC functionality has traditionally been implemented on the wireless card for performance rea...
متن کاملChannel Coding and Clipping in OFDM for WiMAX using SDR
Recent developments in broadband wireless technology heightened the need for WiMAX which assures high-speed data services. Mobile WiMAX is grounded on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/orthogonal frequency division multiplexing Access (OFDM/OFDMA) technology which is an increasing important technique in LTE systems. This paper describes the OFDM transceiver implementation using softwar...
متن کاملHYRA: A Software-defined Radio Architecture for Wireless Embedded Systems
Traditional Software-defined Radio (SDR) architectures cannot go with the requirements of embedded systems, specially in terms of performance and power consumption. Lowpower FPGAs now reaching the market might soon become a viable alternative to overcome such limitations. The Hybrid Radio Architecture (HYRA) introduced in this paper contributes to this scenario as it explores the Hybrid HW/SW C...
متن کاملPAPR Reduction and BER Performance for WiMAX on USRP N210 using GNU Radio
The test bed utilizes an open source GNU Radio software environment and the Ettus Research Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP N210) for performing SDR functionality, which reduces the cost and complexity of the system. This paper focuses on the implementation of an OFDM based WiMAX physical layer on a specific SDR, the GNU Software Radio (GSR). However, a major problem involved with OFDM...
متن کاملPeak to Average Power Reduction Technique in OFDM System
In this paper, OFDM based on Software-Defined Radio (GNU Radio) to reducing the peak to average power ratio is developed and tested. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of encoding digital data on multiple carrier frequencies. OFDM has developed into a popular scheme for wideband digital communication, whether wireless or over copper wires, used in applications such as...
